University
The University of Twente is a young, entrepreneurial university. It aims to set standards in the field of new technologies and to promote change, renewal and progress in society.
With over 11,000 students, it brings together cultures from 85 nations. The university enjoys an international reputation and is included in well-known university rankings such as the Leiden Ranking and the Times Higher Education Ranking.
University of Twente
Research and teaching at the University of Twente is based on the following faculties (20 Bachelor & 34 Master programmes):4
- Behavioural, Management and Social sciences (BMS)
- Engineering Technology (ET)
- Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS/EWI)
- Science and Technology (TNW)
- Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)
The following three institutes are available to carry out technological research:
- MESA+ Institute
- TechMed Centre
- Digital Society Institute
In addition, the university operates several laboratories, which allow cooperation with external partners, particularly in the field of information technology, biotechnology and nanotechnology.
The Faculty
For IS:link students the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS/EWI) is relevant. The Faculty focuses on the increasing use of digital technologies in connection with the needs for safety, health and well-being. The aim is to meet these needs with the help of socially committed technology developers.6

Student life
Student life takes place on campus on a 146 hectare site where research and educational institutions have their place and where events are occasionally held.
Sustainability is a major concern on campus. Smart meters have been installed to regulate energy consumption and targets have been set for the following years to reduce the CO2 footprint.7
Campus life
One well-known event is the world's largest student relay race, which starts in Nijmegen, 185 km away, and ends at the University of Twente.
Over 39 sports associations are represented on campus. In addition, there are bars, restaurants, student and staff accommodation and an open-air theatre on campus.8
The centre of Enschede is easily accessible by bicycle from the campus.
City of Enschede
The university town of Enschede is located in the east of the Netherlands in the province of Overijssel and is part of the Twente region. It has a population of about 158,000 inhabitants.9
Art and culture are omnipresent there. From open-air events to the Roombeek Culture Park and the Wilmink Theatre, there are numerous opportunities to get to the bottom of the city's character.10
In addition to the well-known large department stores, a number of specialist shops have been established around the Van Heekplein, making Enschede the shopping city of the Dutch East. Enschede also has a lot to offer for those who want to eat, drink and enjoy a night out in the city.
Every Tuesday and Saturday is market day on Van Heekplein Square. On Saturday there are more than 160 market stalls. This makes the Enschede market the largest in the eastern Netherlands.11
