University
In 1949, the University of Andes began its teaching and research with seven programmes, 79 students and 16 professors. Today, the university still pursues the goal of providing high quality education and bringing Colombia up to the same level of scientific excellence and progress as other countries.3 The university is the only private university in the country to have received a ten-year institutional accreditation for quality from the national Ministry of Education (2015).4

The Faculty
Research and teaching in the field of information technology is conducted by the Department of Systems and Computing Engineering (DISC). DISC works closely with private and public institutions to further the country's development in ICT. The research activities are carried out in the three research groups: COMIT, ICTSw and IMAGINE. The fields of research include:6

Campus life
The university is located in the centre of Bogotá and comprises 176,000 square metres of building space and 50,000 square metres of green space. In addition to classrooms, the university has 163 laboratories for teaching and research, an auditorium for 600 people, two rooms for art exhibitions, a sports centre with a swimming pool and facilities for 45 different types of physical activity.7

The university campus is located in the historical centre of Bogotá, an area that houses most buildings of cultural interest, universities and a variety of cultural meeting places such as libraries, museums, theatres, scientific and literary centres and art galleries.
Bogotá is the capital of Colombia and one of the fastest growing metropolises in South America. As an economic centre, numerous banks and companies have their headquarters in Bogotá. Important industries in the city are printing and publishing, textiles, food, metal, engineering and electrical industry.8

- Climate: Moderate climate, despite being located in the tropical climate zone. Because of its proximity to the equator, there are no major seasonal differences in climate. The average annual temperature is 13.3 °C. 9
