University
The University of Minho was founded in 1973 and welcomed its first students in 1975/76. Today it is known for its wide range of courses and regular interaction with other institutions.4
The objectives of Minho University include the promotion of higher education and participation in shaping a model of society based on humanistic principles, in which knowledge, creativity and innovation contribute to growth, sustainable development, prosperity and solidarity. In addition, it is important to promote the personal development of students. This should enable students to receive a satisfactory education.5
The University of Minho has earned its name as a research university through its numerous publications and scientific papers, which can be read in the ISI Web of Science and the Scopus knowledge database, among others.6
University of Minho
The University of Minho is located in the northwest of Portugal. There are three campuses in total: the Azurém Campus and the Couros Campus are located in the city of Guimarães, which has the UNESCO World Heritage designation. The third Gaultar Campus, on the other hand, is located in Braga, the third largest city in Portugal.7
The 12 faculties and institutes are spread over the three campuses:8

The Faculty
Relevant for IS:link students is the School of Engineering on the Azurém Campus. This is divided into nine areas. The most important department is the Department of Information Systems (DSI).9
The DSI focuses its research on two aspects:
- The development and improvement of socio-technical units
- The construction of IT applications that are capable of meeting the needs of their respective fields of application.10
In addition, the DIS carries out research & development activities within the framework of the Centro ALGORITMI in the following areas:11
- Information Systems and Technologies
- Computer Science and Technology
- Computer Communications and Pervasive Media
- Industrial Electronics
- Industrial Engineering and Management
Semester dates & courses
Student life
Students of Minho University have access to similar offers and services on each of its three campuses. Students are thus offered the same services regardless of the campus where they spend most of their time. These services include several specialized libraries, canteens, bars and a sports complex.
In addition, the Couros Campus generally offers university projects in the fields of the performing and visual arts. This campus places great emphasis on creative development and is therefore also open to people who are not studying at the university. It is not for nothing that the campus is also known as the "Creativity Campus".12
Campus life
In order to get used to the campus life of Minho University more easily and to make contacts quickly, it is recommended to join one of the many student groups in the fields of music, theater and dance.13
Students can also practice more than 70 different sports on the large sports complexes.14
City of Braga
Minho is a former province of Portugal, founded in 1936 and later dissolved (1976). It comprised 23 municipalities and Braga was the capital of the province at that time. Today, Minho would comprise the districts of Braga and Viana do Castelo.15 The province got its name from the river "Rio Minho", which marks the border with neighboring Spain.
In addition to academic life, Braga, as one of the oldest Portuguese and Christian cities, has a variety of leisure activities and is still characterized by tradition and history.16
