Madrid is the capital of Spain and also of the autonomous community of Madrid. Madrid is one of the largest metropolitan regions in Europe and has about seven million inhabitants. The city of Madrid is the second largest city in the European Union after Berlin and has over 3.2 million inhabitants without suburbs.
For centuries, Madrid has been the geographical, political and cultural center of Spain and the seat of the Spanish government. The King, a Catholic archbishop and important administrative and military authorities also reside here. As a commercial and financial center, the city has national and international importance. Madrid is home to six public universities as well as various other colleges, theaters, museums and cultural institutions.6
